Bridge Rehabilitation Project over the Ribeira Grande River – Municipal Road 538 Figueira e Barros

This intervention, based on a technical report prepared by LNEC (National Laboratory of Civil Engineering), refers to the Execution Project for the rehabilitation of the bridge over the Ribeira Grande, located on the EM538 Municipal Road – Figueira de Barros, in the Municipality of Avis.

Context and Justification of the Intervention

The project arose from the need to repair significant damage to the bridge structure, caused by an exceptional increase in the stream’s flow due to the high rainfall recorded in December 2022. The flooding resulted in the bridge abutments being swept away, compromising its integrity and functionality.

Scope of Work

The solution advocated by this project is comprehensive and focuses on the complete restoration of the artwork and its surrounding infrastructure.

• Artwork Repair: Includes thorough cleaning and treatment of masonry elements (arches and tympanums), joint re-filling, plaster repair, and final painting of the artwork. Unwanted vegetation will be removed, and all buried surfaces (retaining walls) will be waterproofed with a bituminous product.
• Infrastructure Improvement: The project includes cleaning and leveling the stream bed and banks in the intervention area, replacing the metal guardrails, and constructing new edge gutters to ensure proper drainage of water from the road.
• Reconstruction of Encounters: The north downstream wall, which was completely destroyed, will be fully rebuilt.
• Cornice Treatment: Detailed repair of the cornices will be carried out, involving stripping and removal of degraded concrete, followed by the application of anti-corrosion protection to the exposed reinforcement (with products such as SikaTop Armatec 110 Epocem or equivalent), resurfacing with high-strength mortars (such as SikaRep 414 or equivalent), and final treatment with corrosion inhibitors (such as Sika Ferrogard-903 or equivalent) and acrylic paint.

The work to be carried out was properly characterized and planned through site visits and coordination with the Avis City Hall, in an area characterized by its vegetation and natural setting within the municipality.
