S. Romão Wastewater Treatment Plant Construction Project (Ciladas)

Introduction
This technical project refers to the construction of the S. Romão (Ciladas) Wastewater Treatment Plant, located in the municipality of Vila Viçosa. The intervention consisted of developing a complete solution for the reception, transport, and treatment of domestic wastewater, ensuring environmental protection and compliance with legal requirements.

Context and Need
The implementation of the S. Romão Wastewater Treatment Plant arose from the need to ensure adequate treatment of exclusively domestic wastewater from the locality. The design took into account the physical and geological conditions of the site, identified through topographic surveys and satellite photography. The project was structured to serve an intervention area of 269 units, ensuring that the drainage and treatment system met the discharge limits stipulated in the legislation (Decree-Law No. 236/98), guaranteeing the self-cleaning of the collectors and the durability of the infrastructure.
Summary of the Project Completed
The project materialized in the construction of a drainage network and a compact treatment unit with the following characteristics:
- Drainage Network: Installation of PVC-SN8 collectors and precast concrete culverts. The layout follows the slope of the streets to ensure gravity flow, with laying depths that guarantee the stability of the pipes.
- Biological Treatment: Implementation of a sequential operating SBR reactor (or equivalent), using an activated sludge system in extended aeration or total oxidation regime. This technology ensures high efficiency in biological treatment with zero visual impact and absence of odors.
- Treatment Sequence: The effluent follows a sequence that includes screening (manual or automatic), secondary treatment, and flow measurement before returning to the natural receiving environment.
- Complementary Infrastructure: Construction of a support building to house electrical panels and electromechanical equipment. The area was properly fenced and equipped with a controlled access gate.
The project was executed following rigorous standards of structural integrity, including provisions for automated system operation and simplified maintenance to ensure the station’s continued efficiency.
