Improvement of the Access Road to the Mora River Aquarium: Execution Project
Municipality of Mora

Introduction
This article presents the project plan for improving the access road to the River Aquarium, a strategic road infrastructure with an approximate length of 1500 meters. The project aims to transform the existing road into a municipal road, ensuring the necessary connection with the future River Aquarium and guaranteeing high standards of safety and traffic flow for users.

Context and Need
The road under study represents the main access to the River Aquarium, with an estimated annual influx of 200,000 visitors. The original route lacked adequate infrastructure for the expected traffic volume, presenting deficiencies in terms of drainage, paving, and signage. The intervention is justified by the need to provide the road with structural and safety conditions that allow for regular circulation, benefiting access for both light vehicles and trucks, in a territory that requires careful planning to minimize tree felling and respect the existing route.
Summary of the Project Completed
The technical solution adopted focused on the comprehensive rehabilitation of the road, covering the following key areas:
- Geometry and Layout: Definition of new alignments in plan and longitudinal profile, allowing a base speed of 60 km/h. The typical cross-sectional profile includes a 7.00m wide carriageway (two lanes), 0.50m paved shoulders and 1.00m unpaved shoulders.
- Pavement: Implementation of flexible pavement designed for a period of 20 years (Traffic Class T6). The carriageway structure consists of a sub-base and base in crushed aggregate of extensive granulometry (20cm each), a leveling layer in dense bituminous mixture (9cm) and a wearing course in bituminous concrete (6cm).
- Drainage: Execution of a surface and marginal drainage system, including platform ditches lined with B20.1 concrete and the construction of hydraulic passages for transverse drainage, ensuring the correct evacuation of water to existing watercourses or adjacent land.
- Intersections and Access Roads: Redesign of connections with E.M. 501.1 and E.N. 251. The project includes the construction of a roundabout to connect with the campsite, the Gameiro dam, and the southern access to the Fluviário. Public and private access roads have been classified and reconstructed to ensure safe integration into the main road.
- Safety and Signage: Installation of horizontal (road markings), vertical (code), and informational signage, in accordance with current regulations, aiming for quick and easy interpretation by drivers.
- Earthworks: Carrying out deforestation, topsoil removal, excavation, and foundation preparation to accommodate the new geometry and pavement layers.
