Project for the Improvement of the Former National Road 365-4 and Sustainable Mobility Route between Alcanena and Moitas Sale
Municipality of Alcanena

Introduction
This project, located in the municipality of Alcanena, focuses on the complete requalification of the former EN 365-4 road and the creation of a new Sustainable Mobility Route. The intervention extends across three main sections, totaling more than 4,400 meters in length, with the aim of extending the road’s lifespan and improving road and pedestrian safety through better road design.
Context and Need
The need for this intervention arises from the urgent need to optimize traffic conditions between Alcanena and Moitas Venda. The current route lacked a clear separation between motorized traffic and non-motorized modes of transport, and also presented critical safety points at important intersections.
To address these challenges, the project defined the improvement of the existing platform, the widening of the roadway in strategic areas, and the introduction of a pedestrian walkway. The technical solution prioritized the use of the available marginal space, ensuring that the road is perfectly visible to both drivers and pedestrians, reducing the risk of accidents and maintenance costs.
Summary of the Project Completed
The technical solution developed by Envisquantis was divided into three areas of focus:
- Roadway Rehabilitation (Sections I and II):
- In the first section (290m), milling was carried out and a 2.70m wide pedestrian walkway was created.
- In the second section (2,671m), the roadway was widened from 6.00m to 7.00m, complemented by a 0.70m wide ditch and a 2.00m wide sidewalk.
- One of the central points was the redesign of a critical intersection through the construction of an elongated roundabout, aiming to organize traffic and increase fluidity.
- Sustainable Mobility (Section III): Implementation of a 2.00m wide pedestrian walkway extending 931 meters, using materials such as activated gravel and all-in aggregate base layers to ensure a comfortable and sustainable route.
- Paving and Structures: Use of high-strength flexible pavements, with layers of bituminous concrete and bituminous macadam. The pavement bed was reinforced with selected soils (type S4) 0.40m thick, due to the high traffic of heavy vehicles in the region.
- Signage and Safety: Complete plan for vertical and horizontal signage, including the installation of deformable protective barriers (N2) and specific devices for motorcyclist protection (“metal skirt”) in areas with slopes greater than 3 meters.
- Earthworks: Execution of deforestation, stripping and mechanical excavation works, with slopes dimensioned at a 2/3 (v/h) inclination and vegetation cover for erosion control.
