Project for the Extension of Otávio Nunes Godinho Street

Municipality of Ferreira do Zêzere

Introduction

This article presents the Execution Project for the extension of Rua Otávio Nunes Godinho to Rua Maria Vasques, a strategic urban intervention located in the municipality of Ferreira do Zêzere, district of Santarém. The project includes the creation of two new road axes: the first establishes a direct link between the two aforementioned streets, with an extension of approximately 283 meters; the second axis ensures connectivity between the main road and the Bus Station, with a length of approximately 92 meters.

Context and Need

The village of Ferreira do Zêzere, despite its predominantly urban character, includes rural areas that require a more cohesive road network. This intervention arises from the need to create more direct and safer connections between points in the village, facilitating pedestrian and road mobility.

The proposed solution aims to extend existing streets, improving access to public transport infrastructure (Bus Station) and enhancing the quality of public space. The project respects the criteria established in the Urbanization Plan of the village of Ferreira do Zêzere, guaranteeing increased road safety and improved local services.

Summary of the Project Completed

The project execution was developed based on rigorous topographic surveys, adopting engineering solutions that minimize landscape impact and optimize functionality.

  • Geometry and Layout: Definition of a traffic lane with two lanes (one in each direction), each 3.75 meters wide. The design speed was set at 50 km/h, suitable for the urban environment.
  • Cross-section and Pedestrian Profile: Implementation of sidewalks on both sides of the roads, with widths varying from 1.90m to 2.60m, ensuring accessibility. “Half-pipe” drainage ditches were also designed for water runoff.
  • Pavement Structure: Adoption of flexible pavement consisting of bituminous concrete wearing courses, bituminous macadam bonding, and base/sub-base layers of crushed aggregate with extensive granulometry. For the sidewalks, paving blocks were chosen.
  • Earthworks: The project detailed the stripping operations (average thickness of 0.20 m), excavation and backfilling, with slopes of 1:2 (v:h) inclination for better morphological integration.
  • Signage and Safety: Complete plan for vertical and horizontal signage (longitudinal and transverse markings in thermoplastic material), including pedestrian crossings and no-stop and yield signs.
  • Deadlines and Technical Rigor: The project has an estimated execution time of 6 months, following the standards of the Standard Works Manual of Infraestruturas de Portugal.
