Urban Redevelopment Project for the road connecting Fungalvaz and Alburitel
Municipality of Torres Novas

Introduction
This article details the project plan for paving the road that establishes the strategic link between the town of Fungalvaz, in the parish of Assentis (municipality of Torres Novas), and the border of the municipality of Ourém (Alburitel). The intervention, developed by Envisquantis, focuses on transforming a currently unpaved road into a paved infrastructure, ensuring the continuity of the municipal road network for an approximate length of 1,407 meters.

Context and Need
Currently, the connection between Fungalvaz and Alburitel is made via a dirt road which, although consolidated by the passage of vehicles, does not offer ideal conditions of safety, visibility, and comfort. The road crosses areas of dense vegetation and slopes with rocky outcrops, presenting a precarious drainage system composed of unlined ditches and insufficient hydraulic passage for flood flows.
The need for this project arises from the urgency to equip this stretch with technical characteristics that allow for a regular and safe traffic flow. The solution proposed by Envisquantis prioritizes harmony with the existing layout to minimize expropriations, applying punctual corrections to the alignment and grade to ensure visibility and balance the earthworks.
Summary of the Project Completed
The implemented technical solution followed criteria of regulatory rigor and economic efficiency, adapting to the local reality:
- Geometry and Cross-Section: Definition of a platform with a total width of 5.00 meters, including a 4.50-meter-wide roadway (two 2.25-meter lanes) and 0.25-meter-wide paved shoulders. Due to the reduced width, it was decided not to materialize the axial line, using only dashed guide lines (0.12 m) to avoid a feeling of visual constriction.
- Paving: Application of a flexible pavement structure composed of a bituminous concrete wearing course (5 cm) laid on base and sub-base layers of crushed aggregate with extensive granulometry (20 cm each).
- Drainage System: * Transverse Drainage: Replacement of the existing hydraulic passage with a new circular aqueduct of 1.00 meter in diameter, dimensioned for peak flood flows.
- Longitudinal Drainage: Implementation of triangular concrete-lined ditches (0.60 m wide) associated with the excavation slopes, ensuring the rapid removal of rainwater.
- Earthworks and Integration: Execution of excavations by mechanical means in areas of rocky outcrops and embankments with a compaction degree of 95%. The project included landscaping integration through the reapplication of topsoil (initially stripped) on the new slopes.
- Signage and Safety: Installation of vertical traffic code signage (STOP at access points) and reflective horizontal signage on the side curbs, providing safer night driving and better road readability.
