Project for Conducting a Technical and Structural Study for Intervention on the Pintéus Bridge

Municipality of Loures

Introduction

This article presents the execution project developed for the structural rehabilitation of the Pinteus Bridge, located over the Fanhões stream, in the municipality of Loures. The project was developed with the aim of defining the technical interventions necessary to restore the integrity of the structure, with an estimated execution time of 30 days.

Project Context and Needs

The need for intervention was identified following a proposal submitted to the Loures Municipal Council for a rehabilitation study of the aforementioned bridge. The development of the execution project was preceded by a main inspection of the structure.

The Pinteus Bridge is characterized by a brick masonry arch 0.4 m thick, with a 7 m span and a 3.5 m rise, contained by avenue walls of irregular stone masonry, 5 m wide, and direct foundations in basaltic outcrop rock. The inspection revealed very significant degradation of the arch, with a general lack of material in the structural element. Given this scenario, a conservation status of grade 4 was assigned (on a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 corresponds to rupture), resulting in the recommendation for rehabilitation of the structure. The municipality stipulated that the intervention should focus exclusively on structural rehabilitation, without the need for general improvements at this stage.

Summary of the Project Completed

The solution designed for the structural rehabilitation of the bridge consisted of the following main interventions:

The project was developed considering that the works will occur without interrupting traffic, with only occasional restrictions due to the presence of machinery and personnel. The planned works do not affect current traffic or the flow conditions of the watercourse. In terms of safety and health, it was determined that the presentation of a Safety and Health Plan (SHP) is not mandatory, but the contractor must present safety procedure sheets for the works involved at the beginning of the contract.
