Introduction

This project refers to the Stability and Reinforced Concrete Study for the retaining walls located on Rua dos Fidalgos, in Estremoz. The technical intervention focuses on the structural design and definition of the foundations necessary to guarantee the containment and safety of the road, integrating it into the urban context of the locality.

Context and Need

The need for this project is related to the requirement to guarantee the stability of the land and the safety of users on Rua dos Fidalgos. The preliminary diagnosis involved conducting soil tension tests and analyzing the proximity of surrounding buildings and sensitive structures, such as the local church, located 4.60 meters from the construction area. Based on the DRCA’s opinion, the wall will have a maximum height of 60 cm, which required extra care in planning the excavations and verifying safety against the Limit States of Resistance, Cracking, and Deformation, complying with R.S.A., R.E.B.A.P., and Eurocode standards.

Summary of the Project Completed

The structural solution adopted focused on the execution of direct foundations materialized by reinforced concrete retaining walls. The main technical aspects of the project include:

  • Structural Solution: Dimensioning of reinforced concrete elements (Class C25/30) with A400NR steel reinforcement, guaranteeing a service life of 50 years.
  • Foundations and Soils: Option for direct foundations calculated for a stress of 0.200 MPa. The project prescribes the cleaning of soils of inferior consistency and their replacement with leveling concrete to minimize differential settlement.
  • Waterproofing and Drainage: Protection of all buried elements with waterproofing products and water-repellent additives to guarantee the durability of the structure.
  • Excavation Methodology: Definition of a 4-meter perimeter during the removal of the existing wall and the execution of slopes with a 50% inclination to prevent landslides in the church area.
  • Technical Rigor: The calculation considered permanent actions (self-weight and earth pressures) and variable actions (overloads and seismic action through the dynamic method), guaranteeing total stability of the structure.
