Granjinha Cemetery Expansion Project

Introduction

This project consists of the preliminary design for the expansion of the Granjinha Cemetery. The intervention is located on an unoccupied plot of land, adjacent to the old Igrejinha cemetery and near the Granjinha Chapel, where the population center is developing. The project foresees a total intervention area of ​​103.80 m², respecting the legal accessibility standards and the General Regulations for Urban Buildings (RGEU).

Context and Need

The village of Granjinha currently only has the old cemetery, which is completely full. This saturation justified the urgency in presenting an expansion proposal that would allow for the expansion of burial areas. The available land has a steep slope, a general characteristic of the settlement, which required specific planning to ensure that the final implementation area would be flat and functional.

Summary of the Project Completed

The project focuses on optimizing a small plot of land to accommodate 21 perpetual graves, arranged on a single lot. Key technical aspects include:

• Spatial Organization: Two streets were designed: a transversal access street and a longitudinal street that runs throughout the cemetery. The latter is conceived as a geometric extension of the old cemetery’s street layout.
• Accessibility and Comfort: The plan includes the creation of a small parking lot with a reserved space for people with disabilities. A covered area has been planned at the entrance to protect users.
• Materials and Finishes: The building is set on a foundation of dressed schist stone, with masonry walls plastered with fine sand. Metalwork elements, such as the gate and railings, were designed in corten steel.
• Paving: Mechanically milled concrete, honed using a helicopter, was chosen for circulation areas, while the natural terrain was preserved in the burial areas.
• Execution: The project defines a height of 3.20 m and an execution period of 12 months, encompassing phases from site preparation (with leveling up to 2 m deep) to the final external arrangements.
