Rehabilitation and Waterproofing of Reservoirs: Arcada and Escurquela Fountains
Municipality of Sernancelhe

Introduction
This technical article describes the intervention process for waterproofing the existing reservoirs in Fonte Arcada and Escurquela. The operation focused on restoring the integrity of the internal surfaces of these storage infrastructures, ensuring the watertightness and structural protection necessary for the continuity of the water supply service.
Context and Need
Over time, water reservoirs can show signs of degradation, such as the accumulation of debris (loose sand) and corrosion of structural elements. In the specific case of these units, the need for deep cleaning and direct intervention on signs of oxidation in the roof structure was identified. To ensure the effectiveness of the new waterproofing materials, it was essential to guarantee the total absence of moisture and debris before applying the protective layers.
Summary of the Project Completed
The technical methodology adopted for the rehabilitation of the reservoirs followed rigorous preparation and application steps:
- Preparation and Dehumidification: The process began with emptying and ventilating the tanks. A dehumidification system was installed inside to eliminate all residual moisture and allow for the complete removal of loose sand from the floor, walls, and ceiling.
- Structural Treatment: All signs of rust detected in the roof structure were filled with a combination of resin and fiberglass, ensuring the stabilization of critical points.
- Waterproofing System: With the surfaces dry and clean, the multi-layer system was applied.
- Application of a special adhesion promoter to the entire surface of the tank, including the roof.
- Application of a first layer of 300g/m² fiberglass mat.
- Application of a second layer of 450g/m² fiberglass mat.
- Finishing and Protection: The lining received a specific sand-based structural treatment through adhesion and a final top-coat application. The entire reservoir was finished with a white paint finish, providing a hygienic appearance and the necessary final protection against contact with water.
