Rehabilitation and Waterproofing of Reservoirs: Vila da Ponte, Freixinho and Penso
Municipality of Sernancelhe

Introduction
This technical article describes the intervention procedures for waterproofing existing reservoirs in the towns of Vila da Ponte, Freixinho, and Penso. The project focused on the restoration of internal surfaces and structural protection of these storage units, ensuring the ideal watertightness and conservation conditions necessary for the operation of the water supply system.
Context and Need
The intervention was motivated by the need to rehabilitate existing infrastructure, which showed signs of wear such as the accumulation of loose sand on internal surfaces and oxidation points in the roof structure. To ensure the effectiveness of the waterproofing system, it was essential to implement a methodology that guaranteed the complete elimination of moisture and the structural stabilization of the supports before applying the coating materials.
Summary of the Project Completed
The technical methodology applied for the rehabilitation of the reservoirs followed rigorous steps of preparation and multi-layered protection:
- Preparation and Pre-treatment: The process began with emptying and ventilating the reservoirs, followed by the installation of dehumidifiers to completely eliminate moisture. Exhaustive cleaning of loose sand was carried out on the floor, ceiling, and walls. Signs of rust identified in the ceiling structure were filled with a combination of resin and fiberglass.
- Waterproofing System: With the surfaces dry and clean, the following material scheme was applied:
- Special bonding layer applied to the entire interior surface, including the roof.
- Application of a first layer of 300 g/m² fiberglass mat.
- Application of a second layer of 450 g/m² fiberglass mat.
- Ceiling Finishing and Protection: The ceiling received specific treatment to reinforce the sand through adhesion and final painting of Top-Coats, eliminating the need for fiberglass insulation in this area. The entire system was finished with a final coat of white paint.
