Redevelopment of Rua António José Soeiro e Silva, Ferreira do Zêzere
Municipality of Ferreira do Zêzere

Introduction
This project refers to the complete requalification of Rua António José Soeiro e Silva, located in the town of Ferreira do Zêzere, district of Santarém. With an approximate length of 477 meters, the intervention establishes a connection between Rua Dr. Guilherme Félix Faria Soeiro and the National Road 348 (EN348). The main focus of the study is the transformation of this street into an inclusive public space, ensuring that the urban design responds to the needs of all users and not just motorized traffic.

Context and Need
Currently, Rua António José Soeiro e Silva lacks infrastructure that guarantees the safety and comfort of pedestrians. The need for this project arises from the urgent need to provide the street with continuous and accessible sidewalks, especially considering the proximity of educational facilities such as the EB 2,3/ S. Pedro Ferreiro school.
The central objective is to promote universal accessibility, ensuring barrier-free routes for people with reduced mobility and organizing the flow of pedestrian access to homes and street furniture. The preliminary diagnosis dictated the need for a solution that integrates the new sidewalks with the existing widths, avoiding the need for expropriations in residential areas through a variable geometry.
Summary of the Project Completed
The technical solution developed by Envisquantis focuses on optimizing the existing road platform and reinforcing the pedestrian component.
- Geometry and Layout: Maintenance of the roadway with two traffic lanes (3.25m wide each), confined by new sidewalks. The planimetric layout was designed with curvature radii between 160 and 300 meters, suitable for a design speed of 50 km/h.
- Accessibility and Sidewalks: Implementation of new sidewalks with a standard width of 1.60 meters to 2.00 meters. In areas adjacent to the school, the existing widths (1.40m) are maintained to preserve the functional infrastructure, while in residential areas the width becomes variable to respect property boundaries.
- Paving and Milling: The project foresees the milling of the existing bituminous wearing course and the application of a new layer. The sidewalks will be constructed using paving blocks (paving stones).
- Curbs and Footbridges: Use of pre-cast concrete curbs (L15 and L8), with the application of ramped or lowered curbs at service roads and pedestrian crossings. The replacement of existing elevated footbridges with new bituminous structures is planned.
- Road Signage: Complete plan for vertical and horizontal (thermoplastic) signage, including longitudinal and transverse markings, as well as code signs (STOP, yield sign, and pedestrian crossing identification) installed at a height of 2.20m to ensure pedestrian visibility and safety.
- Earthwork: An estimated 1,715 m³ of excavation and 365 m³ of fill earth will be moved, with excavation and fill slopes having a 1:2 gradient (v:h).
