Project for the execution of specialized works for the Vale de Milhaços Elementary School/Kindergarten.
Municipality of Seixal

Introduction
This article details the architectural project for the construction of the Vale de Milhaços EB JI School, located in Corroios, in the Municipality of Seixal. The project consists of developing a modern and functional educational infrastructure designed to serve early childhood education and the 1st cycle of basic education. The intervention focuses on creating pedagogical environments that promote inclusion, accessibility, and sustainability, ensuring the necessary support for the students’ formative process.
Context and Project Necessity
The intention to build this school unit is based on the need to offer the community an educational space that ensures contemporary performance levels and functional requirements. The project arises to guarantee the physical and psychological comfort appropriate for educational activities, respecting the typological and morphological characteristics of the local architecture. There was a need for a structure that observed rigorous conditions of hygiene, structural safety, and seismic resistance, in addition to complying with regulatory requirements for energy efficiency and allowing reversibility for future interventions, thus ensuring the longevity of the architectural heritage.
Summary of the Completed Project
The building was designed with a gross construction area of 3,139.62 m², set on a plot of 7,277.35 m². The spatial and technical organization stands out for the following points:
- Functional Organization: The school is divided into a kindergarten block (with large rooms and direct access to the playground), a basic education block (equipped with interactive boards and natural lighting), and common areas including a library, multipurpose room, cafeteria, and kitchen.
- Outdoor Spaces: These include a playground with specific flooring to minimize impacts, green zones for environmental activities, and recreational areas with permeable floors and artificial grass.
- Construction Options and Materials: The structure utilizes reinforced concrete and metallic elements. The facades feature thermal insulation (ETICS system), and the window frames are aluminum with thermal breaks. Internally, flooring varies between linoleum (classrooms) and colored quartz (common areas and services).
- Sustainability and Efficiency: The project integrates large glazed openings to take advantage of natural light, LED lighting, and a photovoltaic panel system for renewable energy production, aiming for partial self-sufficiency.
- Security and Accessibility: The infrastructure guarantees universal accessibility through ramps, elevators, adequate signaling, and non-slip floors, in total compliance with Decree-Law No. 163/2006 and fire safety standards.
