Project for the layout of the square in front of the Tornada Church, Caldas da Rainha.
Municipality of Caldas da Rainha

Summary of the Project
The proposed intervention focused on the complete rehabilitation of the square, integrating the functional needs of the surrounding area while respecting the historical and religious significance of the site.
1. Mobility and Accessibility
- New Automotive Access: The previous access was eliminated, proposing a new single access to the square via an adjacent secondary road, which underwent widening and improved drainage (with thick paving ditches).
- Organized Parking: Creation of a paved parking area with thick granite sidewalks, with clearly marked spaces, including spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility.
- Pedestrian Safety: Improved pedestrian access with sidewalks of adequate dimensions made of fine white limestone paving stones, and the installation of a safe access walkway between the square and the National Road/bus stop (which was also revised).
2. Creating Multipurpose Spaces
- Large Paved Area: Creation of a large area between the Church and the Health Center, paved with limestone and granite sidewalks, with a grid pattern in different colors. This space is intended to improve access and allow for the holding of festive events.
- Cemetery Support: The large area includes a distinct strip of thick pavement, allowing for punctual vehicle access (e.g., hearse) to the cemetery.
- Flow and Control: Lowered sidewalks with the installation of bollards were proposed to prevent vehicle access and parking in areas exclusively for pedestrian circulation.

3. Landscape Architecture and Equipment
- Green Areas: Existing tree specimens (Olea europaea) were preserved, and new tree (Magnolia grandiflora, Acer pseudoplatanus) and shrub (Juniperus squamata Blue Carpet) species were introduced. These species were framed in scattered flowerbeds, including the area of the religious statue.
- Lighting and Furniture: Installation of LED lights on metal columns for nighttime security, complemented by accent lighting to highlight the church. Street furniture (benches and trash cans) was distributed in an organized manner.
- Stormwater Drainage: For the successful paving of almost the entire area, particular importance was given to surface drainage of rainwater, with the provision of drainage gutters and downspouts in strategic locations to prevent water accumulation.
The Execution Project integrated a wide range of specialized works, from general site surveying and preparatory/earthworks to the execution of pavements and ancillary works, rehabilitation of existing walls, and installation of stormwater drainage. The project also included complete planning for the installation of street furniture and equipment, as well as the installation of vegetation, inert covering, and irrigation systems, ensuring a durable and comprehensive landscape architecture solution.
